When we put ourselves in a negative energy balance, calories out exceed calories in, we lose weight. Period. But just counting calories tells you nothing about how to target fat loss, lean muscle gain, and maximize body composition. Simply aiming to eat 1500 cal/day can mean 1000 calories of pizza and 500 calories of fruit, or 800 calories of ice cream and 700 cals of broccoli. Neither distribution is healthy, nor does this approach lend to an understanding of what those calories should and can look like for goal-setting purposes.
